But we know that's not a satisfying answer, so here's our honest comparison of the four major brands we install.

IKO — The popular Canadian choice

IKO is probably the brand we install most often. Why? Because they offer excellent value for the money, their products are made in Canada (so designed for our climate), and their Cambridge line has become an industry benchmark.

The Cambridge line is the entry-level "architectural" shingle — it has a 3D look that's much nicer than the old 3-tab shingles. For those who want to step it up a notch, the Dynasty line offers better wind resistance and a richer look.

BP — The rugged 100% Canadian

BP (Building Products of Canada) is a 100% Canadian company that has been making shingles since 1905. Their Mystique line is solid and well suited to Quebec conditions, but it's really the Mystique 42 that stands out.

The Mystique 42 is a 42-inch laminated shingle (instead of the standard 36 inches). Wider = fewer seams = less risk of infiltration. Their Weather-Tite technology also ensures better adhesion between the layers.

If you're looking for a rugged product and "buying Canadian" is important to you, BP is an excellent choice.

GAF — The North American #1

GAF is the largest shingle manufacturer in North America. Their Timberline line is literally the best-selling shingle in North America. And there's a reason: it's a very high-quality product with technologies you won't find anywhere else.

The Timberline HDZ uses LayerLock technology, which "locks" the shingle's layers together for superior wind resistance. And if you go with their complete GAF ventilation and underlayment system, you can get their WindProven warranty — a wind-resistance warranty with no wind-speed limit. No other manufacturer offers that.

The Timberline UHDZ is the ultra-premium version: an ultra-dimensional look that almost resembles slate. It's gorgeous, but it's also more expensive.

CertainTeed — Premium aesthetics

CertainTeed is a subsidiary of Saint-Gobain, a global giant in construction materials. Their shingles stand out for their aesthetics — the colours are richer, the textures more defined, and they offer a range of styles you won't find with the other manufacturers.

The Landmark line is their standard shingle, and it's excellent. The Landmark Pro offers extra thickness and a more high-end look. For luxury homes, the Grand Manor line reproduces the appearance of natural slate — it's truly impressive.
